YMCA TEEN CHARACTER AWARDS

For more 80 years the YMCA of Ross County has been building strong kids, strong families and a strong community. Character Values are the building blocks upon which we build.

The Four Core Values we focus on:

Caring – Love; putting others before yourself
Honesty – Integrity; to tell the truth
Responsibility – Duty; to do what you should
Respect – Regard; to treat others as you would have them treat you.

What is Character Development?

Challenging ourselves and others to accept and demonstrate positive values. YMCA staff, volunteers and leaders of every level must challenge themselves first to model the positive values that point to him/her as a person of integrity. Second, the leader must actively and purposefully teach those who are under his or her charge to accept and demonstrate positive character traits. This is how we achieve our mission.

Submission:

Family, teachers, counselors, coaches, neighbors and friends are just a few examples of individuals who are encouraged to nominate teens to receive a YMCA Character Award. Only one nominee per application. Group or team applications cannot be accepted.

Packet should contain the following:

· Complete nomination form
· One typewritten page, answering the following questions in essay form, telling the story about your nominee:
a. Why are you nominating this teen?
b. How has the teen demonstrated the four character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility?

Honoree Criteria

1. Nominees must be 13 -18 years of age and live in Ross County or Vinton County.

2. Activities exhibiting good character and leadership must have been completed between January 1 and December 31, 2007.

3. Anyone may nominate a teen for this award. You may nominate someone who is related to you, and you may nominate more than one person.

4. You must submit a short essay that describes the nominee’s leadership and good character in the home, school, church or community. This must accompany the Nomination Form. Please do not ask the nominee to write this essay. We want an account of your experience with the nominee. Grammar, spelling and punctuation will not be considered in the selection of winners. The essay serves to tell us more about the nominee. The essay should be typed on 8 1/2 x 11 white paper and should be no longer than one page. Please type the nominee’s name at the top of the page in case the essay should separate from the Nomination Form.

5. Please do not the submit nomination materials in any type of special folder. Simply staple the essay to the Nomination Form and mail to:
